The focus of the Department of Biomaterials Science at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry is on the research of dental materials. Current research activities concentrate on the development of titanium alloys for dentistry and their application to prosthodontics; the evaluation of fatigue in dental ceramics; and the application of cast magnetic alloys for prosthetic attachments.
In addition to conducting research, faculty in the Department of Biomaterials teach and serve as mentors at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They teach courses in dental materials to first-year dental and dental hygiene students and in removable prosthodontics to second-year dental students. Biomaterials faculty also lecture on amalgam and mercury toxicity and composite resins in the first-year operative course.
The department offers a MS in Biomaterials for postgraduate dentists and students with degrees in engineering or the physical sciences. Successful graduates may continue their studies and earn a PhD with a concentration in biomaterials science through a program established through the Department of Biomedical Sciences.
